Then, in March, Banegas got up the courage to ask Bonestroo out on an official date.
"When I finally got the nerve up in March, I knew if we started dating it was just going to be for marriage," Banegas said.
He approached DJ Downs in the university marketing department, and the idea took off.
Able Sign Co. made the signs for the cheerleaders, who gave Bonestroo a bouquet of red roses after Banegas proposed. Former regent Laura Conniff arranged for a champagne toast in the Fulton Center afterward.
The two plan to marry next summer.
