There are a total of eight women’s teams competing in San Antonio. Joining the Aggies is Bakersfield, Grand Canyon, Idaho, North Dakota, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado and Seattle U.
For the first time since the 1999-2000 season the WAC also has men’s swimming and diving. The men will also be competing alongside the women at the WAC Championships.
“The WAC has a strong field of teams but if we can focus on our individual efforts and swimming and diving lifetime-best performances we will have a great chance of being competitive,” Aggie head coach Rick Pratt said. “It is a long week of racing and we have many chances to have historical swims and dives.”
NM State has a fourth-place finish and two fifth-place finishes, including in 2013, over the last three years at the WAC Championships. Pratt and his squad had their best finish at the WAC Championships in 2010 when NM State finished second.
The Aggies have had an individual WAC champion in at least one event over the last five years of the WAC Championships, including last season when then-sophomore Jessica Legge was crowned the WAC champion in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. She would become the first two-event winner for NM State at the WAC Championships since 2009. Legge would also go on to break her own school record in the 200 IM at the meet.
NM State finished the season with a 2-6 dual-meet record. Individually, the Aggies have two swimmers who have a top time in the WAC this season and also had a conference swimmer and diver of the week.
Senior Terrin Seaver has the fastest time in the WAC this season in the 200 backstroke. She finished with a time of 1:59.32 during the final of the 200 back at the Hansel Invitational in Houston, Texas, on Nov. 23. That same day, Legge won the 200 breast final with a time of 2:16.17. Her time is also a season’s best for a WAC swimmer in the event.
NM State sophomore diver Audrey Ruiz was named the WAC Women’s Diver of the Week for the week of Oct. 28‐Nov. 3. During the week Ruiz swept both diving events in a dual meet versus Northern Colorado, winning the 1‐meter event with a score of 264.37 and the 3‐meter event with a career‐high score of 253.87.
Seaver earned WAC Women’s Swimmer of the Week honors for the week of Dec. 2‐8. During the week, Seaver swept both backstroke events during NM State’s dual meet with Northern Arizona. She won the 100 back in a time of 57.19 and the 200 back with a time of 2:03.75. Seaver also swam the leadoff leg of the Aggies’ winning 200 medley relay team.
“It has been a long season and I am very proud of the hard work our team has put in,” Pratt said. “They are a terrific group of ladies who have sacrificed so much to get to this point, this week will be a celebration of their commitment.”
