“Jeneva at 6-3, plus Tyesha Taylor who is 6-4 and redshirting this year, will both give us something that we have been missing since I've been at NM State,” Trakh said, “and that's a big, quality inside game. Jeneva can post up and shoot the 17-footer. We will go from an average size team to a very big team next year with the addition of Jeneva.”
At the conclusion of last season, Toilolo was named the Oahu Interscholastic Association (OIA) Eastern Division Co-Player of the Year and was named an OIA first team all-star.
Toilolo also plays volleyball at Farrington and has played for the Hawai’i Express and Team Aloha club basketball teams. Last April she was part of the Team Aloha squad that traveled to Phoenix, Ariz., and won the 47-team Arizona Elite Spring Classic Tournament.
Salas, a 5-10 guard from Placentia, Calif., in the Los Angeles area, plays for the El Dorado High School Golden Hawks. She has excelled at El Dorado since her freshman year when she averaged 11 points per game and 3.5 assists per game en route to winning a defensive MVP award and being named to the All-Century League second team.
“Brooke is a highly recruited player who is a very versatile guard and who has the potential to be one of the best players ever to put on a NM State uniform,” Trakh said. “I've known Brooke's mom Liz, her aunt Jennifer and her uncle Charlie since they were in grade school and I can tell you that she comes from a very competitive and athletic family.”
As a sophomore, Salas was named team MVP after averaging 17 points, 4.8 assists, four rebounds and two steals per game and leading the Golden Hawks to a 27-5 record. The team reached the quarterfinals of the California state playoffs while Salas was named to the All-Century League first team and the All-California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) first team.
Last season Salas won her second-consecutive team MVP after averaging 19.6 points, 6.4 assists and 7.2 rebounds per game. She was once again an All-Century League first team and All-CIF first team selection while also adding an All-Orange County first team honor. She led El Dorado to a CIF Southern Section final and the semifinal round of the regional state playoffs.
Salas has also proven to save her best performances for postseason play. In three years at El Dorado she has played in eight playoff games, averaging 22 points, six assists, seven rebounds and 4.1 steals per game. Last season she had a season-high 35 points in a playoff game win versus Mira Costa.
With the early signing period over, coach Trakh and the rest of the Aggie squad now turn their attention back to this season as NM State begins the season Friday in El Paso, Texas, versus I-10 rival UTEP.
