Sophomore Camille Orito, who was the individual medalist of the tournament with a 1-over-par 143, now has two tournament wins under her belt in her collegiate career and head coach Jackie Booth would love to see her catch former Aggie great and PGA golfer Alena Sharp who had five career wins with the Crimson and White.
“The team played better in our qualifying rounds than we did a year ago,” said Booth. “Once we got to the practice round here in Utah, the WAC Champions from a year ago showed up to play. It is very exciting for me and Coach [Danny] Booth to see the team come out and play like this.”
Three different Aggies were in the top three to give NM State a 13-stroke win. Santa Clara posted a 590 (+22) and came in second while WAC participants, Grand Canyon and Utah Valley earned eighth and ninth place respectively.
Orito, who was the 2014 WAC Freshman of the Year, won the tournament with a 1-over-par 143 (70-73), and fellow Aggies Viviana Macias and Kacey Dalpes are tied for second with a 2-over 144. Macias fired off two rounds of 72 and Dalpes tallied 73 in round one and a 71 in the second round. Dalpes was one of two players in the tournament to make 26 pars out of 36 holes of play. Macias was great from the par 4 and par 5 holes with the best scoring average from those holes.
Sophomore Valeria Macias, the sister of Viviana, is tied for sixth with a 4-over par 146 (72-74) and senior Paige Darwin rounds out the Aggie lineup tied for 30th scoring a 154 (77-77).
