The Aggies step away from the courts in preparation to host the 2014 WAC Tournament in Las Cruces, April 25-27. All matches for the tournament will be held at the NM State Tennis Center with the first women’s match of the weekend set for 1 p.m. on Friday, April 25. Seeding for the tournament is yet to be determined.
Courtesy of New Mexico State University LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State junior women’s tennis player Susana Alcaraz was named Athlete of the Week by the Western Athletic Conference for the week of April 7-13. The honor is the first for the team and for Alcaraz this season. Alcaraz, a junior from Aguascalientes, Mexico, won both of her singles matches at the No. 2 spot, and along with doubles partner Marie-Pier Thiffault, went 1-1 in doubles. She earned a two-set win (7-6, 7-5) against Arkansas State’s Janie Nowland to help NM State to its 6-1 win, while she and Thiffault defeated an ASU duo 8-3 at the third court. Alcaraz also earned a three-set victory (6-7, 6-4, 6-4) in singles at the second court over Idaho’s Almudena Sanz as NM State defeated the Vandals 4-3.
