“I would like to thank members of the search committee, including professors Stu Munson-Mcgee and Jack Thomas, faculty member Kevin Melendrez, community representative Jeff Benegas and current soccer student-athletes for their work and efforts to bringing closure to the process,” Boston said. “I look forward to Freddy’s tenure as the head women’s soccer coach and we all believe we are on the cusp of having a competitive soccer program. Delgado joined the New Mexico State soccer staff as an assistant coach in March 2013. Delgado has 17 years of experience coaching in the collegiate ranks including five seasons as a Division I head coach.
Delgado arrived in Las Cruces after spending the 2008-12 seasons as the head coach at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He helped the Trojans to two Sun Belt Conference Tournament appearances in his tenure.
Delgado spent five seasons transforming the UALR program into a contender in the Sun Belt Conference. In addition to two conference tournament showings, Delgado led UALR to academic success as well. The NSCAA recognized the Trojans for their team GPA of 3.0 or above for five academic years under Delgado.
Under Delgado's guidance, Jane Picarelli broke both the UALR and the Sun Belt record for saves in a career in the 2010 season after she ended her four years in a Trojan uniform with 480 career saves. 2010 also saw unprecedented exposure for Christina Veasley, an Alamogordo, N.M., native, who entered the season as the SBC Preseason Player of the Year and spent the majority of the season ranked amongst the top-100 players in the country, according to TopDrawerSoccer.com.
In his second season at UALR, Delgado and the Trojans made history in 2009 with the program's first appearance in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship game. The 2009 Trojans also made Sun Belt Tournament history by becoming the first No. 8-seed to knock off a No. 1-seed, scoring a 1-0 overtime victory against Florida International, Nov. 4, 2009.
UALR followed up its victory over top-seeded FIU by defeating North Texas, 1-0, the following day to earn its first-ever trip to the Sun Belt Tournament Championship game, before suffering a 1-0 loss to Denver in the title match.
In the 2009 season, as a sophomore, Veasley became the first player in school history to earn first team All-Sun Belt Conference and NSCAA All-South Region accolades. She tied for the Sun Belt lead with 12 goals and led the SBC with five game winners. In conference-only games, Veasley led the Sun Belt with 18 points and eight goals.
Veasley was one of four Trojans named to the Sun Belt's All-Tournament Team in 2009, along with defenders Jacquelyn Paz and Kamiya Merrick, and Picarelli at goalkeeper. Picarelli recorded two shutouts during the 2009 SBC Tournament and allowed just one goal over UALR's three matches.
In his first season at UALR, Delgado led the team to its third-consecutive berth in the Sun Belt Tournament. He compiled an overall record of 8-11-2 and a 4-6-1 mark in Sun Belt play. Delgado earned his first career victory on Aug. 29, 2008 as the Trojans defeated SEC member Mississippi State, 2-1, in overtime.
As a head coach, Delgado posted a 33-64-4 overall record and a 15-36-3 conference record at UALR. He was named UALR head women's soccer coach, April 15, 2008, after seven seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
Delgado joined the ULM program in 2001 and was an integral part of the Warhawks' success and growth before his departure. During his time at ULM, Delgado's guidance helped produce 26 all-conference selections, four Academic All-Americans and a school-record 14-6-2 season in 2004.
A standout at Regis University from 1993-97, Delgado began his coaching career at his alma mater, where in four years as an assistant coach (1997-2001) he helped guide the women's program to the 1999 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular-season championship and a conference tournament title in 2000. During his time at Regis, Delgado also served on staff of the Colorado Olympic Development Program from 1997-2001.
Delgado gained additional experience as the head coach of the Colorado Rush U-16 boys team from 1999-2001, and served as the club director of the NELSA Soccer Association from 2001-2008. In 2005, Delgado received his United States Soccer Federation "A" license, the highest certification offered for collegiate soccer coaches.
