“I feel like I am a hard working player that plays for my teammates,” January said. “I feel like I can bring a good amount of skill to the offensive and defensive side of the ball.”
January, who played his freshman season at Cerritos College, caught the eye of NM State head basketball coach Marvin Menzies.
“Anthony is a talented forward that oozes with athleticism,” Menzies said. “He’s a guy that brings energy to the court and he’s unselfish player. He has the potential to be a special player.”
It can be argued that the transition from a big city like Los Angeles to Las Cruces would be tough for a college student, but January says otherwise.
“Los Angeles is a big city and Las Cruces is a small town,” January said. “The big difference is that the school, team and town are all one big unit. Even though Las Cruces is a small town, I think that it helps me focus on school and basketball without having distractions like I might have had in Los Angeles.”
January is undecided in his major but is thinking about entering the field of graphic design or something related to computer technologies.
“I’m good with computers and other types of electrical technologies, so I could definitely see a career headed in that direction if basketball doesn’t work out.”
January has set some goals for the upcoming basketball season and all of them are geared toward having a successful season with his team.
“I want to go far,” January said. “I want to help the team to another WAC championship and help this team deep into the NCAA tournament.”
“When I chose to come to New Mexico State for basketball, I knew I wanted to stay on the western region of the country,” January said. “The coaching staff and my teammates have made me feel at home."
