The theme of the Western Athletic Conference SAAC in 2013-14 is ‘Shaping the Youth of the West’ and NM State’s SAAC top priority is to shadow that same theme and make a difference in the Las Cruces community.
“This is the first time we have ever done something like this as SAAC and we would like to continue a partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Las Cruces,” NM State SAAC president, Christy Barela said.
“As Aggies, commitment to the community is a top priority,” Barela said. “Anytime we get to interact with our community we are reminded how lucky we are to be Aggies.”
The first event for the NM State SAAC was a success as they were able to get a great response from the participants of the Boys & Girls Club, as well as the student-athletes.
“Our student-athletes worked very hard to provide the Boys & Girls Club participants with a memorable experience, and I think they certainly accomplished their goal,” Director of Academic Services and SAAC Advisor, Carmen Rogers said.
Each week the SAAC at NM State discusses any new developments with the NCAA, WAC, and NM State that would directly affect student-athletes.
“Everyone had a great time, but most importantly I think the children learned a valuable lesson in sportsmanship, personal wellness, and giving back to the community,” Rogers said.
