Both Cristina and Cassandra attended Eldorado High School in Albuquerque, N.M., where they focused on cross country and distance running in their careers.
Cristina is a former 800-meter champion and posted her fastest time at 2:18.00. She was the Great Southwest runner-up, she holds the Cross Country Metro course record and was named Academic All-District.
Cassandra Amberg was also a member of the 2013 squad that finished as runner-ups to the state championship. She finished second only to her sister individually in the cross country state championship with a time of 19:08.20.
In 2013, Cassandra was the state runner-up in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:19.65, which was her fastest finish in the race in her career. She was also a member of the 1600-meter medley relay team that won a state championship and was named Academic All-State.
Cristina and Cassandra were also part of the 2012 cross country team that won the state championship.
“Being able to sign both Cristina and Cassandra was a big deal,” assistant coach Christopher Huff said. “They were one-and-two in the state in cross country last season so this was great for us. Being able to sign student-athletes from New Mexico is a great thing for us and it’s a great thing for NM State and for fans here to be able to see local athletes competing for our university.”
