“I am very happy with the results this weekend,” Aggie head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “All of the hard work the team has been putting in these last few weeks has begun to pay off. If they keep working this hard we will have a great season.”
Senior Susana Alcaraz and junior Ashvarya Shrivastava each went undefeated throughout the weekend in the top flight. Both made it to the championship singles’ match of flight No.1, but instead of facing off against each other the NM State pair were named co-champions of the tournament.
The second flight had similar results as the semifinal draw was full of Aggies. With senior Denise Van Der Ben, juniors Erika Castillo Lopez and Mia Brandt and freshman Rimpledeep Kaur all making the semis, the draw had to be reshuffled to give NM State different opponents. Van Der Ben, Kaur and Brandt also went undefeated in the tournament.
Aggie winners in singles’ play on Sunday included Van Der Ben, Brandt, Kaur, junior Chloe Jolliff, sophomore Gabrielle Joyce and freshman Juliana Guerin, all won in straight sets.
Sophomore Marie-Pier Thiffault, meanwhile, came back to defeat UTEP’s Matilda Tench 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 to claim third place in the third flight.
In doubles’ play, the NM State duos of Shrivastava and Alcaraz, Jolliff and Brandt, Castillo Lopez and Kaur and Guerin and Thiffault all won their doubles’ matches on Sunday.
