“We got off to a great start winning all three doubles,” Aggie head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “We played with a lot of energy going into the singles.”
In singles, Nguyen picked up her first victory at the No. 1 spot for NM State. Nguyen and Cardinal Dariva Dashutina were tied a set a piece and 2-2 in the deciding set when Dashutina had to retire due to injury.
Alcaraz, Van Der Ben, Shrivastava and Witte all won in straight sets at the 2-5 spots. Witte has won four matches in a row while Alcaraz extended her streak to three-consecutive wins.
The Aggies will now play the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks on Sunday, Feb. 16, beginning at 10 a.m. at the NM State Tennis Center.
“Lamar played us extremely tough and this match could have gone either way,” Fernandez said. “We have another tough match on Sunday versus Northern Arizona. If we keep fighting this hard every single match, the results will take care of themselves.”
